Decks is very important to young people living in Dartmouth and surrounding areas, as young people have limited access to a safe space to meet with friends and to access support outside of school. The session offers young people activities like sports, crafts, cooking, music, dance and various workshops.
One of our focuses at Decks is based around team sports such as basketball, table tennis, hockey, football and netball; to make our sessions more inclusive and to encourage young people to develop key skills such as communication, leadership and teamwork.
“I’m a Youth Volunteer here at Decks, so when I was down here as a kid with my friends and everything it was a brilliant place to come. So, as I got older, I decided to apply to be a Youth Volunteer and help children make good choices. And since then I’ve benefited so much from working with a really positive team, and it’s a great place for young people to come and talk and know they are safe here”. – Maddy, 18
As well as sports, we provide support and learning opportunities for young people, through conversations and workshop. In all the three of our Dartmouth provisions we focus on mental health, substance misuse, bullying, respecting the community and criminality. This has made a difference to many young people who are reporting feeling more confident, happier at school, happier at home and don’t feel so isolated by other’s actions.
In May 2019, working in partnership with CAM, our young people and volunteers created a promotional film to demonstrate the need for a youth drop in. Check out the film on Youtube – “Youth Genesis Decks” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwcF1k-Wn3o
